The Orifice Series explores the link between the body and nature using metal and wood juxtapositions. Each piece draws upon organic, bodily imagery and fur textures overlaid on carved cherry. A focal point is created through pierced holes, an allusion to the many orifices of the human body, centering feelings of discomfort. Traditional metalsmithing techniques are employed to entice further investigation, creating a tension between abject imagery and refined metal forms. I hope to encourage the viewer to question their relationship to the natural world through a reminder that we are all animals living in relationship to an ever turbulent ecosystem.
Each piece was carefully handcrafted using repousse, an ancient technique of forming sheet metal, woodcarving and burning. The repousse forms are heat treated to emblazon the surface with a lustrous red oxide and are set in sterling silver. The wood is carved in minute detail to mimic hair texture and painted with polychrome to contrast the rich color of the metal. Connections between metal and wood are made using small, riveted jump rings, ensuring the lifespan of the object will last for years to come.
